A new initiative has been launched to catalyse a revolutionary transformation in the Nigerian fashion industry by adopting circular fashion principles and innovations.

  • The UK-Nigeria Circular Fashion Global Innovation Network is led by the Innovate UK Global Alliance Africa Project team based in Nigeria.
  • The project is based on the idea that both the UK and Nigeria share a common goal—to create a high impact, innovative but socially responsible fashion industry.

THE AIMS: The Network aims to foster active bilateral collaboration and will bring together innovators, entrepreneurs, researchers and investors from the UK and Nigeria to promote the adoption and development of circular fashion products and services.

  • The project was launched at an event on 7 May featuring engaging presentations from representatives in the UK and Nigeria, as well as create a platform for inspiring keynote discussions from UK and Nigerian experts in the circular fashion sector, sustainable fashion research and alternative natural fibres as well as provide valuable insights into the circular fashion industry and innovative opportunities for collaboration between both countries.
  • The project’s focus areas are expected to open the channel for members to share knowledge, collaborate on projects, and access funding and support opportunities.

THE CONTEXT: Nigeria’s fashion industry is one of the most vibrant and dynamic in Africa, drawing international attention due to the distinctiveness of the materials that stand out from the crowd.

  • Conversations in the industry are beginning to tilt towards circular fashion characterised by ethical sourcing and production, reduced environmental impact, and a commitment to social responsibility.
  • The UK-Nigeria Circular Fashion Global Innovation Network seeks to foster relationships and opportunities for future collaboration within the industry.
  • The network will engage stakeholders on key elements needed for the development of the Nigerian circular fashion industry including innovation, product design, material selection, recycling infrastructure, supply chain transparency, policy, regulation, consumer awareness and education, technology and economic incentives.

FOCUS AREAS: The event highlighted the three focus areas for the Network:

  • Redefining chemicals in production/manufacturing: The Network will support organisations reducing the harmful environmental effects associated with traditional chemical processes in textile manufacturing.
  • Recycling and upcycling of textiles: The Network will be focusing on the adoption of circular business models, such as leasing and take-back programs, to extend the lifecycle of fashion products.
  • Innovating sustainable materials for sustainable fabrics: This area will cover exploring innovative ways to utilise other types of sustainable materials such as agricultural waste, fish skin, natural fibres etc in the creation of fabrics.
