WeftSide: Driving the Pleasure of Slowness, Ageing Beautifully Over Time

The Gothenburg-based brand WeftSide is spanking new, founded only this year. A spokesperson tells texfash about the minimalist approach that the pursuit of endless growth entails, favouring simplicity and quality instead.

Long Story, Cut Short
  • Weftside simplifies stock management and facilitates seamless re-production by selecting only a few chosen fabrics that age beautifully over time and using them repeatedly.
  • The future of denim lies in balancing heritage with innovation, focusing on fewer but better products, and maintaining ethical practices.
  • At WeftSide, minimalism is a guiding principle expressed through essentialism.
The WeftSide journey is inspired by the concept of “the pleasure of slowness,” embracing the philosophy of denim—no more, no less. Always and (n)ever the same.

WeftSide offers three jeans models in three colours, focusing on seasonless durability rather than an abundance of options. It emphasises slow production, working with partners in Tunisia and Italy, and values processes that minimise waste.

The product details reflect this commitment to craftsmanship and sustainability. The buttons, rivets, and labels are carefully selected for their quality and aesthetics. All metal components, such as buttons and rivets, are made from ICE Gold, a blend of gold and silver. This choice avoids the use of plastic while ensuring enhanced durability and consistency across all of the brand’s collections. The labels are made from vegan materials, and the pockets from organic cotton, contributing to environmentally friendly production.

The brand uses premium, unwashed fabrics so that the denim ages naturally with the wearer, and offers a limited number of fabrics and colours to further reduce its environmental impact. Finally, the brand's scarves, called "flags," carry WeftSide’s philosophy, where every detail embodies values of simplicity, durability, and understated elegance.

Please tell us a bit about your denim origins and journey. And, what led you to embark on this project?
WeftSide was founded in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 2024 by three friends with extensive experience in the global fashion and denim industry. The brand was born out of a shared desire to create denim that embodies simplicity and stands apart in an industry driven by relentless growth and noise. Our journey is inspired by the concept of “the pleasure of slowness,” embracing the philosophy of denim—no more, no less. Always and (n)ever the same. We strive to bridge the legacy of the past with relevance for the present and the promise of the future. Additionally, as showcased in our flag collection, we aspire to collaborate with artists and creatives, infusing our products with artistic value and storytelling.

How does your supply chain work? How easy or tough will it be to scale it up – from the sourcing of natural materials, worn-out garments, deadstock, blankets, curtains, etc.?
WeftSide’s supply chain prioritises quality, sustainability, and ethical production practices, with manufacturing in Tunisia and Italy during low production intensity periods. This strategic approach reflects our commitment to “the pleasure of slowness” and allows us to maintain premium standards. Scaling up may present challenges due to our emphasis on responsibly sourced materials like organic cotton and deadstock, but our partnerships with dedicated weavers and mills make it achievable. The resell aspect of our brand, including our worn-ins, supports our sustainability ethos by giving garments a second life and extending their story.

We simplify stock management and facilitate seamless re-production by selecting only a few thoroughly chosen fabrics that age beautifully over time and using them repeatedly. This practice aligns with our sustainable philosophy: if something works well, why change it? The same principle applies to our trims, where consistent use of metal trims, threads, and labels helps streamline inventory and re-production.

Where do you see your label and yourself, say three years from now? What does the future of denim look like to you?
In three years, we envision WeftSide as a prominent name in premium denim, recognised for its slow, thoughtful production and timeless design. The future of denim lies in balancing heritage with innovation, focusing on fewer but better products, and maintaining ethical practices. We aim to collaborate with the best artists and specialists in their fields to create exceptional works together. We want to grow organically and sustainably, ensuring that denim—no more, no less continues to resonate with those who value quality and meaning over volume.

Your profile on the Denim PV website mentions minimalism, simplicity, and slow production. Could you please elaborate/explain? How do you enforce minimalism, and how do you bring about simplicity in denim?
At WeftSide, minimalism is a guiding principle expressed through essentialism. Our foundation is rooted in three models in three colours, which we thoughtfully expand upon to align with our ethos. These are the models we wanted 10 years ago and the ones we will love 10 years from now. While we go beyond these initial core styles, this base reflects our commitment to essentialism and timeless design. We practice simplicity by making deliberate choices, eliminating excess, and emphasising denim—no more, no less. Using high-quality materials, eco-friendly processes, and consistent details such as button fly designs ensures that our products maintain integrity and reflect our belief that true craftsmanship is found in essentials that stand the test of time.

You also use unwashed fabrics. Tell us more about this aspect, and how it furthers your sustainability quotient? As a designer, what do you keep in mind for ensuring the product's durability?
Unwashed fabrics are central to our sustainable practices. They allow denim to age naturally, embodying the life of the wearer and telling a unique story over time. This reduces the environmental impact by conserving water and minimising the use of chemicals. Jeans made from unwashed denim have a longer lifespan and blend with the wearer’s life, making no two pairs ever the same, just as no two people are identical. This uniqueness underscores why denim is so unique. We emphasise strong seam construction, robust threads, and high-quality, organic fabrics for durability. Our attention to detail and mindful production cycles support long-lasting garments that align with our philosophy of Always and (n)ever the same.

In the near future, WeftSide envisions itself as a prominent name in premium denim, recognised for its slow, thoughtful production and timeless design.
