The 99th edition of the Expo Riva Schuh & Gardabags—an important sourcing trade show for footwear, bags and accessories—concluded on a high in Riva del Garda, Italy with participation of almost 1,300 exhibitors, companies and brands from 42 countries, and about 9,000 attendees from 103 countries, marking a strong return from China.

  • With almost 80% of the visitors from Europe, the event at the Riva del Garda witnessed a significant increase — +12.5% — from Spain and Germany, as compared to the last edition in June 2022.
  • A 7% decline in Italian buyers was offset by the broad participation of other markets—a total of 103 countries.
  • The return of a large number of Asian exhibitors, with over 250 companies from Mainland China alone, and débuts of Switzerland, Japan, Nepal, the Czech Republic and Mexico, the event was an excellent opportunity to gauge market sentiment.
  • The fair's digital platform led to meetings between some 10,000 industry professionals.
  • The 100th edition celebrations from 13–16 January 2024 will be distributed throughout the entire Riva del Garda area and spread over time since they will involve both the winter and summer editions.

The trade impetus: The fair was an important meeting ground in a changed geopolitical order where production halts in certain countries due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the logistics crisis of recent years have led many to rethink their procurement strategy and seek closer and more reliable partners.

  • The dramatic rise in inflation, on the other hand, has forced manufacturers to keep costs under control and so seek out suppliers who can sell at reasonable prices.
The summit saw footwear industry leaders discuss the future of sourcing at a panel that brought together Asian manufacturers' associations and international retailers' and buyers' associations.

Summit points: Dedicated to further exploring the encounter between supply and demand and assessing post-pandemic challenges and opportunities, including new consumer trends and emerging supply chains, the summit saw footwear industry leaders discuss the future of sourcing at a panel that brought together Asian manufacturers' associations and international retailers' and buyers' associations. The event was held in Europe for the first time in collaboration with CIFA—Confederation of International Footwear Association—to discuss the difficulties and prospects of the post-pandemic market.

  • The report by Enrico Cietta, Chairman of the Expo Riva Schuh & Gardabags Scientific Committee, provided a clear look at how markets are changing, analysing the undercurrents reshaping the face of globalisation, now less global and more regional, strongly influenced by geopolitical considerations.
  • Market focus dedicated to various countries throughout the world (Latin America, the Far East, Kenya, Europe, DACH countries and the United States) allowed buyers and exhibitors to get to forge new relationships.
  • The focus on innovation was renewed with the now customary Innovation Village Retail event that brought together the world of distribution (and beyond) to explore the possibilities offered by new technologies for a more sustainable and innovative shopping experience, as demonstrated by the winner of the Startup Competition—Cents—an ethical, engaging and sustainable solution allowing a percentage of each e-commerce purchase to be donated to charitable causes.

WHAT THEY SAID:

At this edition, I perceived an atmosphere among the best I have ever experienced. The quality of the exhibits, the range of the product offering, the depth of the events and the response from exhibitors and visitors: all of these components were met with positive feedback from the fair's international trade visitors.

In a European market where some of the most important countries are currently stagnant, the increased attendance rate is an excellent sign rewarding Expo Riva Schuh & Gardabags' decision to also focus on other markets, such as those of Latin America, Africa, the United States and South East Asia.
