Nike Debuts Apparel Technology Which Transforms in Real Time to Keep Runners Cool

Aerogami by Nike is the all-new performance-apparel technology that increases breathability when athletes need it most.

Long Story, Cut Short
  • Aerogami is a venting system that autonomously adapts to one’s needs, creating more-breathable performance gear with on-demand ventilation.
  • The material innovation uses moisture-reactive vents that autonomously open and close upon sensing sweat against the body.
  • Debuting in the Nike Run Division Aerogami Jacket, the technology is built to solve runners’ timeless problem of regulating body temperature and ventilation while wearing a running jacket.
The new Nike Run Division Aerogami Jacket features the venting system across the chest and back of the garment—two of the areas where runners heat up and sweat most—allowing airflow to travel through the jacket as runners move.

Nike has unveiled a new apparel technology venting system—Aerogami—that adapts to a runner’s needs, creating more-breathable performance gear with on-demand ventilation.

THE TECHNOLOGY: The technology by scientists and innovators from the Nike Explore Team (NXT) and the Nike Sport Research Lab (NSRL) is designed to create a product that interacts with the body in real time as one warms up, sweats and cools down.

  • Tiny-winged vents open as sweat builds against the skin, allowing better airflow and for sweat to escape. When the body cools down and sweat dries, the vents close back up. This capability comes from a moisture-reactive film applied to the vents that autonomously contracts and expands upon sensing sweat against the body.
  • The debuting Nike Run Division Aerogami Jacket features the venting system across the chest and back of the garment—two of the areas where runners heat up and sweat most—allowing airflow to travel through the jacket as runners move.
  • Informed by testing in the NSRL’s environmental chambers and data visualisation from runners’ heat and sweat maps, the vent placement varies between the women’s and men’s jacket to accommodate for gender-specific needs, such as vents on the women’s jacket around the area where a sports bra sits.

RELEASE: The jacket also features Storm-FIT ADV—Nike’s pinnacle performance-apparel material—to help protect runners from wind and rain

  • The women’s Nike Run Division Aerogami Jacket releases in July 2023 on nike.com and at select retailers. The men’s jacket releases later this fall.

WHAT THEY SAID:

Aerogami is our latest example of Nike’s culture of innovation focused on solving the timeless needs of runners. We know feeling too warm, uncomfortable and distracted while wearing a running jacket is a common challenge many runners face, so we’ve obsessed developing an innovative solution that gives them increased breathability without compromising style and protection. What’s great about this technology is not only can the athlete feel the benefit, but they can also see it.
