EU Transition Pathway for Textiles Ecosystem Calls for Commitments by 30 Sep

The deadline to contribute to the EU initiative to support specific actions towards the textiles pathway in the bid to build a greener, more circular and digital future for the textiles ecosystem and to make it more resilient and competitive, ends 30 September.

Long Story, Cut Short
  • The pathway, the outcome of a co-creation process with stakeholders, is a comprehensive framework that identifies specific actions.
  • The purpose of the call is to collect commitments from stakeholders on the concrete actions that they will take in order to bring forward and help achieve the actions identified in the Transition Pathway.
The Transition Pathway for the Textiles Ecosystem was published on 6 June 2023. It is an EU initiative which seeks to build a greener, more circular and digital future for the textiles ecosystem and to make it more resilient and competitive.

The European Commission’s deadline for the ongoing call for commitments to the Transition Pathway for the Textiles Ecosystem ends 30 September

  • The EU initiative urges stakeholders to support specific actions towards the textiles pathway in the bid to build a greener, more circular and digital future for the textiles ecosystem and to make it more resilient and competitive.

THE PATHWAY: The pathway, the outcome of a co-creation process with stakeholders, is a comprehensive framework that identifies specific actions. It aims to identify what the digital and green transitions, increasing resilience and competitiveness mean for the textiles ecosystem and what specific actions and commitments are needed to accompany this transition.

  • A total of 50 actions have been outlined within eight building blocks, with a timeframe for implementation and a clear picture of the key actors involved.
  • The call now is for commitments that can be made by stakeholders to support implementation of the EU Pact for Skills, taking part in the textiles network of European Digital Innovation Hubs, promoting circular and sustainability practices and supporting the creation of sorting and recycling hubs.

THE PURPOSE: The purpose of the call is to collect commitments from stakeholders on the concrete actions that they will take in order to bring forward and help achieve the actions identified in the Transition Pathway.

  • The commitments will contribute to the co-implementation of the Transition Pathway. The Commission will support  this process by facilitating exchanges of knowledge and best practices.
  • The commitments do not necessarily need to be a new action. If an organisation has an existing strategic engagement with a concrete target in the future and a clear contribution to a specific Transition Pathway action, it can be reported as a commitment.

The key elements for the commitments thus include:

  1. ongoing or future actions with;
  2. measurable targets to assess the implementation and progress of the action; and
  3. link to a specific Transition Pathway action.

THE BACKDROP: The 2021 updated EU Industrial strategy highlighted the need to accelerate the green and digital transitions of the EU Industry. And it was in this context that this co-creation process was launched to create a Transition Pathway for the Textiles ecosystem.

  • Building on the co-creation process with stakeholders, the Transition Pathway policy report for the Textiles ecosystem was published on 6 June 2023. Following this, the Commission launched a Call for commitments to stakeholders.
