Climate Business Hots up: BCG Acquires Quantis to Accelerate 'Sustainable' Transformation

Global strategy consultancy Boston Consulting Group (BCG) is set to acquire Quantis to further strengthen climate and sustainability (C&S) expertise and transformation capability. Together, BCG and Quantis intend to "lead the global transformation toward a new planetary economy" in which business gives nature a seat at the table.

Long Story, Cut Short
  • BCG was recently announced as the exclusive consulting partner for COP27, being held in Egypt in November, providing analytical capabilities and industry insights from its extensive experience helping companies, governments, and multilateral organisations
  • Quantis currently helps global companies to better understand their climate, biodiversity, water, land, and plastics footprints; and develops and delivers bespoke strategies to align with the planet’s boundaries.
A Quantis statement said: "BCG is the right partner for Quantis. BCG has ambitious sustainability plans that are already in place and is an influential industry voice through engagement at the most important forums of our time, from COP27 to the Science Based Target Network (SBTN)."

Boston Consulting Group (BCG) has announced a deal to acquire Quantis, an environmental sustainability consultancy guiding many of the world’s largest organisations on their sustainability transformation.

Quantis will operate as a standalone business unit within BCG and will retain its brand and leadership team. The parties expect the acquisition to close later this month.

Backdrop: BCG was recently announced as the exclusive consulting partner for COP27, being held in Egypt in November, providing analytical capabilities and industry insights from its extensive experience helping companies, governments, and multilateral organisations accelerate their climate and sustainability journey.

  • BCG’s COP27 involvement follows partnerships with the World Economic Forum, UN Climate Change High-Level Champions, successive COP presidencies, SBTi (Science Based Targets initiative), CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project), Breakthrough Energy Catalyst, and First Movers Coalition.

Combining BCG’s extensive industry knowledge and transformation capability with Quantis’ deep scientific expertise and solid sustainability reputation will create an unstoppable force to drive the shift from business as usual to business at its best. The stakes for our planet have never been higher. This deal will enable us to take a critical leap towards achieving our vision for a new planetary economy. The Combination: By teaming up to drive sustainable business transformation, BCG and Quantis will, according to a Quantis statement:

  • Drive greater impact — faster — for the planet than we can alone. We’ll help clients not only assess their environmental impacts and plan to address them, but also transform their organisations to operate within the planet’s capacity. We’ll be able to push for stronger and bolder commitments on nature among CEOs.
  • Be colleagues and thought partners. Quantis’ scientific approach and renowned environmental expertise are highly valuable and complementary to BCG’s capabilities. Together, we’ll foster collaboration and exchange of ideas as thought partners.
  • Pursue opportunities in line with our shared conviction. We both agree that business must be at the forefront of driving systemic change. Combining our complementary strengths — BCG’s deep sector expertise and ability to guide clients through complex transformations with Quantis’ scientific prowess and planetary boundaries approach — will create a unique market offering to help clients address the environmental crisis.
  • Protect the culture that has made Quantis so successful — and welcome its influence on BCG’s organisation. This means retaining the Quantis brand and teams. BCG will safeguard and nurture our distinct culture, which is built on a steadfast commitment to driving true sustainable transformation.
