Researchers at the University of Tokyo have found that a specific combination of consumer segments, product characteristics, and service types make for a sustainable clothing rental service and that certain garment types could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 21% ~ 75% depending on consumer behaviour and service implementation.
 

Renting clothes can reduce the fashion industry's enormous environmental impact, but so far, the business models have not worked very well, says a study arguing that the best chance of success is for a rental company to provide clothing within a niche market, such as specific sportswear, and to work closely with the suppliers and clothing manufacturers.

In a unique concept aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of the air traveller and promote circular economy, Japan Airlines (JAL) along with the Sumitomo Corporation has launched a trial "Any Wear, Anywhere" clothing sharing service for foreign tourists and business travellers.

When a practising lawyer decided to start a rent-your-clothes service in India way back in 2016, in a market where rental is still quite a taboo, she slogged at all levels—from the warehouse to the retail store and even home-delivered orders to customers. Her company, valued at ₹500 million, today rents out 300 garments each day. UK's largest circular fashion enabler, Advanced Clothing Solutions (ACS), has partnered with Circularity Capital, with an investment of £10 million to meet its expansion plans.
