The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Global Fashion Agenda (GFA) have launched a multi-stakeholder project which aims to identify and converge existing industry aligned targets. The project is called Fashion Industry Target Consultation.
- The project was formally launched at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27), now under way at the Red Sea resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh.
- The project will adhere to the five priorities of the Fashion CEO Agenda: Respectful & Secure Work Environments, Better Wage Systems, Resource Stewardship, Smart Material Choices and Circular Systems.
- The consultation will seek to formulate new targets where they are not currently covered such as criteria for purchasing practices and circular design, to establish a route towards a net-positive fashion industry.
Other Details: Together, UNEP and GFA are inviting stakeholders and partners from across the global value chain including brands, retailers, NGOs, manufacturers, data providers, innovators, intergovernmental organisations, policymakers, and more to share their insights on the performance indicators and milestones that the industry must strive to meet, and importantly to gauge what tools and support are needed by these actors to take action.
- This consultation will help provide clarity and drive accountability for a range of consistent, measurable, monitored and complete goals, so that the industry is able to understand the current state of progress, the areas that must be focused on to accelerate impact, and the timeframe to do so.
The Survey: The consultation will consist of an online survey and regional workshops through which participants can submit feedback.
- The online survey is now available and will be open for the full duration of the consultation concluding 27 January 2023 and can be translated into all languages.
- On entering the survey, participants can select which priority areas they wish to provide feedback on.
- Anonymised and aggregated findings from the survey will presented during an informative webinar in Q2’23.
Regional Workshops: Each region has a different relationship with the textile value chain, and a global set of targets and monitoring must incorporate this to ensure that there are no tradeoffs, while also ensuring environmental and social protections.
- UNEP, through the Global Opportunities for Sustainable Development Goals (GO4SDGs) initiative and in close collaboration with the UN Alliance for Sustainable Fashion, will host virtual regional workshops to collect insights on specific targets and their localised impacts, as well as their feasibility and ambition levels required.
- A key objective of the regional workshops is to ensure that developing country and SME views are reflected in the consultation.
- Workshops are planned in the following regions: Latin America and the Caribbean, West Asia, AsiaPacific, and Africa
