Deforestation

As the curtains go up today on the 28th United Nations Climate Change conference or COP28, the leather industry is pioneering a zero-deforestation livestock farming system that promotes traceability from cradle to slaughter.

The cross-sector Deforestation-Free Call to Action for Leather has World Wildlife Fund (WWF) joining in as partner to help galvanise efforts toward ending deforestation and conversion of natural ecosystems linked to cattle farming.

The Leather Working Group has worked out a guide to help stakeholders across the leather industry value chain to help them navigate business under the ambit of the European Green Deal and the 2030 EU Biodiversity Strategy.

India needs to explore ways to face the challenges arising out of some legislations in the European Union that are violative of WTO agreements and bound to make Indian exports to the region less competitive.

Sustainable forest management has become increasingly critical as the role of man-made cellulosic fibres (MMCFs) gains currency as preferred materials that play a vital role in the textile-fashion industry's efforts to embrace environmentally responsible and socially accountable approaches. A whitepaper by PEFC or the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification equips brands and retailers on how to advance the traceability of MMCF materials.

Nonprofits Textile Exchange and Leather Working Group have together launched a global initiative to address deforestation and promote sustainable practices within the leather industry to create transparent and equitable supply chains, protecting natural ecosystems.

Even as Indonesia’s Royal Golden Eagle Group (RGE) with its four subsidiaries flatly denies all allegations made in the recently released Pulping Borneo report, the publishers of the investigative study have dismissed the denials as “insufficient.” A texfash.com report.

There is a critical imperative to improve the metrics used to quantify environmental impact indicators, especially related to the variety of factors that influence environmental sustainability of forest products, a study that looked at potential non-climate environmental impacts of wood-based textile fibres has contended.

The European Parliament has reached an EU Regulation on deforestation-free supply chains. Once adopted and applied, this law is intended to ensure that a set of key goods placed on the EU market will no longer contribute to deforestation and forest degradation in the EU and elsewhere in the world. Environmental organisations, however, have pointed out loopholes in the proposed law.

With the intent to ensure that the cost of preserving forest is shared more equitably by the two ends of the supply chain and between majority and minority world countries, Textile Exchange and the Leather Working Group (LWG) are putting out a call to action for brands and retailers to commit to sourcing all their leather from verified deforestation-free supply chains by 2030 or earlier.
