Corp Action / Patagonia Fallout

1 October 2022

4 minutes
All of Patagonia’s profits, some US$100 million annually, will fund efforts to address climate change and advance wilderness preservation, the company announced recently.

Why Patagonia’s Purpose-Driven Business Model Is Unlikely to Spread

Patagonia's Yvon Chouinard’s imaginative act of moral courage is uplifting, but it would be naive and even harmful to expect many others to follow his example by voluntarily choosing a purpose other than the pursuit of profits.

Buyers essentially require trade fairs that address the latest consumer preferences as well as the seasonal trends in fashion.

What the Physical Fair Offers Cannot Be Replaced by Digital Tools

The Autumn edition of Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics and Yarn Expo, one of the biggest trade events in this part of the globe, has now been merged with the spring edition next year because of the pandemic situation in China. Wilmet Shea, Deputy General Manager of fair organiser Messe Frankfurt HK, talks threadbare about how trade event organisers are operating in these trying times and, of course, Intertextile Shanghai.

Highlact products will biodegrade under certain compost conditions. At a compost temperature of 68°C and a moisture content of around 50%, the compost decomposes in six days flat!

From the Land of Innovation: A T-shirt that Decomposes in Six Days Flat

Away from petroleum-based fabrics, comes an innovation — a fibre made from polylactic acid (PLA), a biodegradable plastic made from corn, under the brand name Highlact. Could it be the best material to replace polyester in terms of quality, cost and supply? texfash.com explores.

Biomaterials / Polybion

22 September 2022

5 minutes
Polybion's biomanufacturing processes do not require custom-made machines and equipment—it can use existing machinery for other industrial and fermentation processes. Regarding the machinery for the stabilisation process, it can use the same equipment as traditional tanneries; it is only necessary to change the stabilisation and/or tanning formula to avoid the discharge of hazardous chemicals and focus on reusing water.

R&D, Investments Still Needed for Agri-waste Textiles to Take off in Big Way

Polybion creates Celium, a premium, high-performance biomaterial from fruit waste. A leather alternative available as fabric, albeit a lot more expensive, the company claims that Celium’s performance is almost equal to cowhide leather. Gabriela Irastorza Dragonné, Head of Communications & Culture at Polybion, tells texfash.com why investment, scaling and deployment are imperatives to help zero-carbon biomaterial companies to offer lower costs as time goes by.

Biomaterials / Polybion

21 September 2022

7 minutes
Polybion defines novel materials as "bio metamaterials," which are materials that don't exist in nature and are not created by any living beings we know. By introducing bio metamaterials to the market, it hopes to reach industries like the pharmaceutical industry, the healthcare industry and pretty much any industry to offer sustainable solutions to manufacturing processes.

Each Biomaterial Must be Considered on a Case-by-Case Basis

When cutting-edge technology is applied to fruit waste it creates an all-new world of revolutionary, premium biomaterials — where performance meets possibility. The technology, modelled on nature’s own design, aims for an animal-free, more sustainable future — one cell at a time. And doing this is Mexico-headquartered Polybion as it moves from linear to circular, leftover to constructive, and from leather to Celium. texfash.com talks to Gabriela Irastorza Dragonné, the Head of Communications and Culture at Polybion to know more. The first part of an interview.

15 September 2022

5 minutes
Yvon Chouinard wrote in a signed sttement: Truth be told, there were no good options available. So, we created our own. Instead of 'going public,' you could say we’re 'going purpose.' Instead of extracting value from nature and transforming it into wealth for investors, we’ll use the wealth Patagonia creates to protect the source of all wealth."

Under Cloud / Sustainability Claims

13 September 2022

4 minutes
A dress that H&M sells under its 'Conscious' tag in Hong Kong. The investigation by the Netherlands Authority for Consumers & Markets revealed that H&M offered their products using general terms such as “ecodesign” and “conscious“ without immediately specifying clearly the sustainability benefits with the claim.
