A rare golden textile once reserved for emperors in ancient Rome has been recreated by scientists in South Korea using a farmed pen shell species. Beyond replicating the fabric’s shimmer, researchers identified the nanoscale protein structures responsible for its enduring colour, opening potential pathways for sustainable, dye-free textile innovation rooted in marine biology.
